Aphasia Peer Mentor Program

The Aphasia Community Center proudly announces the “Aphasia Peer Mentor Program.” Our Peer Mentors, Rick Reese and Tom Boyle, work with newly diagnosed persons with Aphasia and their family members. Since education and outreach are critical to improving community awareness of Aphasia, their goal is to spread awareness about Aphasia and give support in the rehab setting at Sarasota Rehab Pavilion. Their first excursion was very successful!

Rick was a patient at the Sarasota Rehab Pavilion after his stroke. Both Tom and Rick will share their after-stroke journey. They will talk about their struggles with Aphasia and how hard they have worked. In addition, the Aphasia patients will learn about local resources, like the Aphasia Community Center.

Inpatient and Outpatient Rehab Services at Sarasota Memorial customize treatment plans to meet individual goals and needs. The SMH rehabilitation team has earned certification as a Stroke Specialty provider. Their program provides services that focus on prevention, minimizing impairment, reducing activity limitations, and maximizing the participation and quality of life of those who have suffered a stroke. The Aphasia Peer Mentor Program is proud to participate in the work of this department.
