Get to Know Hank Prince

Name: Hank (Henry) John Prince (My Slovenian name is Enrico Giovanni Princic.)

When did you have your stroke?

On July 24, 2015, my wife Donna and I were on vacation in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

What was your occupation?

I began my career as a Professional Donut Stuffer at Collinwood Bakery in Cleveland, Ohio.

While at the University of Dayton, I worked as a research tech at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. for the Apollo Mission Moon Landing.

Upon graduation, I moved north to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.  I was a Technical Writing and Philosophy of Education Professor at Lake Superior State University in Sault Saint Marie.

I became the American Association of University Professors Research Director in my next career move.

I retired as Deputy Director of the Michigan House of Representatives Fiscal Agency.

As a volunteer, I have enjoyed being a Play Reader/Reviewer and an usher for Florida Studio Theatre.  I was a roofer for Habitat for Humanity.  Donna thought she would take me off roofs when we moved to Florida, but I saw that that didn’t happen.

I am currently involved in several social justice projects.

What are your favorite activities now?

My favorite activities are reading nonfiction, having friends over for Happy Hour, watching British mysteries, walking to a nearby bench, and visiting with friends and their pets.

What piece of advice would you offer other people with Aphasia?

DON’T GIVE UP!

What are your most significant accomplishments this past year?

Initiating and implementing my own fitness schedule.  This is really tough for me.

Participating in a Purdue University/NIH Aphasia Research Project

In what ways are you raising awareness of Aphasia in our community?

I have been a speaker at a community forum titled “What is Aphasia?”

I hand out my personal card to inform people about my Aphasia.

What is your favorite dessert?

Just so you know, my favorite desserts are molasses cookies and apple pie.
