The Aphasia Community Center has lost special friends in the last year. Diane Lombard, Tim Lampkin, and Joe Scofield were active members of the Aphasia Community Center.
Diane and Bob Lombard
Diane and Bob Lombard were instrumental in starting the aphasia community in Sarasota. They were both huge advocates for people with Aphasia. Diane was a schoolteacher and became a volunteer helping people to learn to read. Bob served in the Air Force in Vietnam and became a civil engineer. He played guitar in a band when he was young and loved music. Both Diane and Bob loved their careers. They lived all over the world and often told stories of their adventures. They loved their family very much, including their daughters Jennifer and Kathleen. Unfortunately, Bob suffered a massive stroke in his early 50’s, leaving him with Aphasia. After that, they moved to Venice, FL, where they joined a local aphasia support group. When that support group was discontinued in 2007, Diane co-founded the Suncoast Aphasia Support Group. This is how the aphasia community in Sarasota was born. Diane and Bob were active in the support group and helped many people over the years. Diane was warm and welcoming. Bob made everyone smile and loved being around people. Diane was also involved in the early planning days of the Aphasia Community Center. Unfortunately, we lost Diane in 2022 and Bob in 2020. Still, their memory lives on with the legacy of the Aphasia Community Center.
Tim Lampkin
Tim Lampkin became a Suncoast Aphasia Support Group friend several years ago. After a stroke left him with Aphasia, he joined the support group. From the first time Tim walked into the room, you could tell he was a people person! Tim’s career was in sales, and he loved to talk to people. Tim always encouraged people, making them feel special. Without a doubt, he was an advocate for people with Aphasia. Tim became active in the support group and made friends very easily. Tim greatly loved his family, including Cathie, Kelli, and Chris. He loved to cook and often talked about when he lived in Spain. Tim was very much a friend of the Aphasia Community Center. He even helped to demo our new room, showing up with a toolbelt and plenty of tools! Tim had also planned to volunteer at the center and participate in the Aphasia Advocacy Program. Sadly, he was taken from us last year. We have many warm and special memories of Tim, and we will always think of him wearing his toolbelt and safety glasses!
Claud “Joe” Joseph Scofield, Jr.
Joe was a frequent attendee at the Aphasia Community Center Reading Group. The group and the larger Aphasia community in Sarasota benefited Joe during his stroke recovery and his battle against Parkinson’s Disease. Throughout his life, Joe held various jobs, primarily as a meat cutter at multiple grocery stores. He had many hobbies and interests, including enjoying the outdoors, camping, the beach, and working around the house. Joe’s favorite activity was riding his Harley with his friends and wife. Joe is survived by his wife, with whom he recently celebrated 50 years of marriage, his sons Jason and Jamie, three grandsons, and two brothers. Joe is someone who would do anything for anyone. His memory will be cherished by the friends he made in our Aphasia community, along with those friends he made during his life.
